Desks for home office needs can be an interesting adventure which includes taking some details into consideration. There are people who want all matching finishes, and those who just want the functional utility features. Let's take a look at some of the details to keep in mind when finding the perfect ensemble.

Most of your work will be done at your desk, and you want it to be comfortable with plenty of room for those things you need most often. Your computer will have to rest somewhere, and you may also have a printer, or a fax machine which needs a space of its own. Don't forget the telephone, which needs to be within reach, and there could be a calculator which needs its space, as well.

Cubbyholes are the work of an organized mind, and a truly functional desk would have many intentional places for keeping items that are used most often. You wouldn't want to miss an important appointment because your note about it was lost under a pile of papers. A desk that is designed for multi-tasking could be well worth investigating.

Every time a person opens their snail mail, there are more documents which need to be filed. A desk that has some means of keeping these file folders could be very handy. A few models have more than one file drawer, and some have no drawers. You may be more interested in a desktop folder accessory.

An all purpose desk would have a place for a computer keyboard, even a place for a laptop to recess out of the way. Most units have a keyboard tray which simply slides out when needed and then retracts when not in use. A full sized computer may need a place to be protected and out of the way.

The finish will need to be cleaned periodically, and choosing a surface which can withstand moisture might prove to be advantageous. Coffee and hot tea could damage some finishes, so you may want to consider a heat resistant surface. Scratches could occur from moving office equipment on the surface so a scratch resistant finish may be best.

Each job description in an office could need a different style of desk, and there are four main types. The computer desk is especially designed for computer needs, while another one for a receptionist would only need a surface and perhaps a single drawer. Other needs might require an L-shaped unit, while an information center could make better use of a U-shaped model.
